The Clinical Case

Most Guards Protect Teeth by Getting in the Way of the Athlete.

Stock and boil-and-bite appliances are bulky, lose thickness when molded, and only stay in if the jaw is clenched. In MMA, hockey, and grappling that is a failure — of retention, of breathing, and of compliance.

01

Thickness Where it Counts

Labial thickness held at 3–4 mm against IADT and ringside-physician guidance for high-contact sport, with rounded flanges short of the vestibule and no sharp edges.

02

Open Palate, by Design

Palatal coverage stops just past the cervical margins. The open palate keeps the airway clear so the athlete can breathe, communicate, and comply — without pulling the guard.

03

Suction, Not Clench

Palatal coverage stops just past the cervical margins. The open palate keeps the airway clear so the athlete can breathe, communicate, and comply — without pulling the guard.

Material Specification

Resin Written for the Mouth, Not Melted in a Pot.

What the Literature Actually Says — and What it Doesn't.

Rodin Protect is not sold as a strength supplement. It is sold as protection that does not punish breathing. The papers below are the reason we design that way — and the reason we are careful about what we claim.

2019

Ferreira et al. — Do mouthguards affect athletic performance?

15 trials, 312 athletes. Custom-made guards were mostly neutral: 3 improved a test, 7 showed no difference, and 2 impaired at least one measure. The signal is “do not assume a penalty,” not a guaranteed performance boost.

2021

Morales et al. — Bite-aligning mouthguards and sport performance

Review of 27 studies. The cleaner signal is jump height and lower-limb power when athletes clench on a device designed to a registered bite — not on a generic boil-and-bite tray.

2021

Lässing, Buscà, Miró — Airway compliance and sport-specific outcomes

Custom appliances can change breathing mechanics and sport task performance differently than stock guards. Swimming and basketball data argue for thickness control and fit over universal shapes.

Dental splints in sport & Frontiers narrative review

Updated reviews continue to separate protection (well supported by literature) from performance enhancement (mixed, device-specific, dependent on bite registration). We cite both categories, and we do not collapse them into a single claim.

This material does not claim concussion prevention. Rodin Protect is a custom intra-oral appliance fabricated by a dental professional.

The Material

Printed with Rodin 3D Resin

Every Rodin Protect guard is 3D-printed using Rodin resin — the same material trusted by dental labs and clinicians worldwide for precision digital fabrication.

Rodin 3D Resin is a Pac-Dent brand of premium dental-grade 3D printing materials, engineered for digital dentistry and certified for intraoral use.

Deployment

Built for Contact Sports. Designed to Clinical Standard.

01

Intraoral Scan

Scan at a Rodin clinic or partner lab. Records the arches — this is the cast, not the bite record.

02

OCCLU Pro™ Bite Registration

Jaw relationship recorded at the intended vertical opening. The guard is designed to that clinical position.

03

RodinWorks AI Design

Sports-guard template applied to the registered bite: 3–4 mm labial, open palate, flanges designed to specification.

04

Print, Cure, and Deliver

Ackuretta SOL SE prints Rodin Protect. Two units delivered: fight guard and spare.

OCCLU Pro™ • Required Clinical Step

The Bite Record The Guard Has to Respect.

A medically sound sports guard is an occlusal appliance. The intraoral scan records the teeth. OCCLU Pro records the jaw relationship those teeth must sit in. Without that record, Rodin Protect is a bumper. With it, the vertical dimension, the contacts, and the jaw position are clinical decisions — not approximations.

Vertical Openings

2–3 mm posterior — material where protection is needed, without forcing the temporomandibular joint or narrowing the airway.

Balanced Contacts

Recorded occlusion, not two teeth doing the work of a full arch. IADT and ringside guidance both require balanced occlusal contact.

Physiologic Jaw Postion

The jaw position is a clinical record at a prescribed opening — not an athlete’s best effort on a hot tray.

Cites the Literature

Morales 2021’s performance signal appeared on registered-bite appliances. Without the OCCLU Pro record, those sentences do not apply to your guard.
